Street Trees
If you have a street tree issue that you would like to report, please send an email to llarson@sentrymgt.com.
About our street tree replacements and treatments
Waterford's tree programs include tree replacement and limited tree treatments. Non-ash street trees are replaced as needed within the limits of the annual budget allocation for non-ash street trees. Ash street trees (which line the main streets and a few others) are treated biannually for the emerald ash borer, with selective replacements. Homeowners will be notified if the street tree adjacent to their property is scheduled for replacement.
- The association identifies and evaluates tree replacements annually. All tree species follow the master plan. 2020 Master Street Tree Plan
- Street trees are located in the tree lawn of the city-owned street right-of-way adjacent to a homeowner’s property. The tree lawn is also known as the parkway, or simply the area between the curb and sidewalk, or the equivalent area if no sidewalk is present.
- To report a missing or failing street tree and apply for replacement, please contact the homes association at llarson@sentrymgt.com for more information.
- Homeowners remain responsible for general street tree care and trimming as required by Leawood City Code. Please note, Leawood City Code prohibits the topping of street trees.
Non-Ash Street Tree Policy
As adopted in 2020, the Waterford Homes Association (the Association) is now responsible for the replacement of dead, very damaged, and missing non-ash street trees. A designated budget provides for a limited number of removals and replacements (within yearly budget restrictions.)
Non-ash street trees will be replaced in existing locations, or in the case of missing trees, at the designated interval for street trees, consistent with the Waterford Master Landscape Plan and city codes.
The Association will identify removals/replacements with, but not limited to, the following criteria:
- Non-ash trees that pose a public danger or are dead
- Missing trees considering the longest missing or earliest report date
- Very damaged trees considering date identified by the association or reported by the homeowner
- Gaps on street blocks
- Geographic distribution in the neighborhood
- Environmental factors that would affect a tree’s ability to thrive
- Species availability
Homeowners may also report a tree for assessment by emailing the property manager.
Homeowners care of street trees
Homeowners remain responsible for the general care of street trees adjacent to their property, including trimming of overhanging branches per Leawood City Code. Please note that Leawood City Code prohibits tree topping of street trees.
The master plan
Our street tree environment was designed in compliance with the requirement for street trees in the Leawood City Code at the start of Waterford’s development. Street trees are located at regular intervals of approximately 35 feet to meet the minimum spacing requirement that was set by the city.
In 2016, in response to the ash borer issue affecting so many of our street trees, the homes association commissioned a master plan update. The plan identified replacement tree species for necessary replacements and diversified the species in our street tree palette to lessen the risk of future widespread tree loss. Unity, and street identity of street sections and cul-de-sacs, were also goals of the plan. In 2020, the master plan was reviewed to proactively plan for any new tree threats. Periodic reviews are planned.
